This week on the show Mike and Jim share some great listener feedback and once again put a call out for followers on twitter (show: @mindofmen; Jim: @mindofmenjim; Mike: @mikevilla) and wonder if anyone in the greater New England area would be up for a Mind of Men Herf. With all we hear about the downturn in the economy, Jim points out a positive side - the value of the dollar and suggests now is the time to buy Whisky overseas.

Next, Mike has long been a fan of the Blackberry, but Jim just made the leap and shares his thoughts. In a few other tech stories we hear about how there are to be no Apple products in the Bill Gates family, a great free tool for recording your Windows desktop, and a number of security and privacy stories round out the mix. In our final two stories, Mike talks about a proposal he read about for merging the Pacific with the Mountain time zones, and Jim finds an article about why Rush Limbaugh is actually bad for the Republicans.

MINDOFMEN94 - Artisan Steak Tasting

We lead off with some housekeeping, thanking our first donor to the show who wished to remain anonymous. We talk about our experiment broadcasting the show using Stickcam. It went well, so we will probably look to do that more in the future. We also talk about some of the changes taking place on our Mind of Men Facebook group and invite everyone to drop by as well as to subscribe to our Twitter feeds (Mike's is mindofmen, Jim's is mindofmenjim).

Mike showed off his new Blackberry Storm, we laughed about the Arod situation, and Mike told us about his 5 minutes of fame on an evening talk radio call-in. We talked about a couple of funny videos we'd seen and wrapped up wit a discussion on the stimulus bill.

In our second segment, we are joined by Carrie Oliver of the Oliver Ranch. Carrie has embarked on a mission to create a more educated steak lover. In the past, unless you lived on a ranch, there is a good chance you don't know much about the last steak you had. Carrie's company provides steaks with pedigrees - you know where the beef came from, how it was raised, and what it was fed. Just as the environment can impact the flavor of a good wine, it can have a similar impact on the flavor and texture of the beef you eat.

In the back half of the segment, Carrie takes us through a guided tasting in which Mike and I have four pieces of meat with only a color coded stick to tell them apart. We try each one, share our thoughts and then Carrie tells us what each one was.

It was a lot of fun and we definitely encourage you to order your own taster's pack and give it a try.

One note - we were doing this via Skype and Jim has not gotten all of the Skype bugs out of his laptop, so apologies for the background noise during the interview. It is not a huge problem, but it is definitely not up to our usual audio standards.

MINDOFMEN93 - Home Theater Part One

This week provided some special challenges as Mike and I had to do this show remotely. Since we moved back to a bi-weekly format we have not had to do this so it's clear we had forgotten all we learned. Jim was in the studio but Mike was on a headset, so while the audio quality is fine, we were not both on the same type of microphone, so you can certainly tell the difference.

We opened the first segment talking about the Superbowl and its attendant commercials, discussed Google's glitch, and the new Amazon Kindle. We then touched the Politics realm again talking about Obama's pronouncement of capping executive salaries for companies that take bailout money and the financial community's reaction as well as some other political tidbits.

In our second segment, Jim presented part one on Home Theater and discussed the genesis of Surround Sound as well as covered things you need to know when purchasing speakers for your new surround sound setup. We also provided some product recommendations across the price spectrum.

We'll be back later with part 2 where we will cover the rest of the components you need for a great home theater setup.

This week, Jim shares his experiences with his dead Media Center PC (again) as well as his switch to Windows Vista 64 bit. We then cover the news that Circuit City is closing 155 stores as well as remind everyone about the Black Friday Ad sites. The guys share some more news on Windows 7, Netflix opening the Watch Now service up to Mac users, and the upcoming Xbox Dashboard update.

Jim then talks about the method that he discovered to get 25% off purchases made on eBay using Microsoft's Live Search. Detailed are posted on the forum.

In the politics segment, we discuss the election and some listener feedback from Adam about our election coverage. Mike goes off on a rant about things he learned from this most recent vote. We then wrap up the politics segment discussing the landmark California vote establishing a Constitutional Amendment to ban Gay marriage as well as some of the machinations being undertaken to get this vote overturned in the court system.

In the second segment, Jim presents his first of two parts on the upcoming switchover to digital television, what this means for you, the various types of HD Television formats, the different types of connections, and what exactly video scaling is. Next week, Jim will present part two in another mini episode.

MINDOFMEN84 - Things to Consider on Election Day

Welcome to another of our "mini episodes" during one of our off weeks. With the Presidential Election this week, Jim figured that since we had planned to do this topic in one of our shows and were rapidly running out of time, we would do an off-week mini episode - turned out when Jim was done recording it was not so mini.

Jim had to fly solo on this one with the exception of the cigar and libation segment at the end which had been previously recorded.

Jim starts by talking about some of the positive things this past week in the stock market, touches on the Windows 7 news released this week, discusses some suggestions for dealing with the Police when stopped, and briefly editorilizes on the latest crop of Mac switcher ads.

In the politics segment, Jim talks about Ted Steven's conviction and decision to continue to pursue re-election in spite of it and shares a story about a local Boston politician who is in a similar situation. Jim also discusses a story about how most major newspapers have endorsed one candidate or the other and wonders if this is really an appropriate thing for a news organziation to be doing.

In the second segment, Jim presents some final thoughts that you might want to consider as you go to the election booth this coming week. Jim thinks that he stayed relatively non-partisan, but you can be the judge of that.

Welcome to our first episode "in the raw" which means that we put this episode out the way we recorded it with no editing. MINDOFMEN 24: One Year and Still Going Strong (206) 203-3526

**Our apologies, as we mentioned in the episode, we had some equipment problems. Long story short, we needed to go to our backup audio recording which is not as good as our primary one usually is so our appologies for the clipping on some of Mike's parts. We'll figure this one out in time for next season.**

Well, hard to believe that this is the last episode of Season 1! Jim and Mike started this project a little over a year ago and went live with our very first episode on July 15, 2006. We want to thank everyone who has been a loyal listener and especially thank those who have been with us since the beginning.

In this first half of the episode Jim and Mike catch up on what has been going in since the last episode. Jim has an update on his crazy neighbor across the street, Mike talks about his recent vacation into the 1950s. Jim talks about a misrepresentation of a recent Supreme Court decision by CNN as an example of how the news media often gets things wrong and the guys wrap things up with a discussion of how cities are starting to ban Trans Fats.

In the back half of the episode, Jim and Mike update a few items they have talked about over the last year including HD-DVD, Vista, the National Motorists association and of course Apple's iPhone. Jim wraps the segment up by noting that we are overdue for a new iPod model.
